Having
a new job is great but I need cash flow in the meantime. This means asking one
of my friends for money. Having been in DC for over 11 years, I have never
asked for help; but, there is a first time for everything. I am grateful that
she has helped me because now I know that I can cover my food for at least two
weeks; plus, I will start working (at least getting paid training) this
upcoming week. This is probably the only time that I will ever need gap
insurance.

XD30 - Day 9 – Coming through
Finally! My security clearance
has come through. I don’t know why it has taken this long but I am very happy
that today is Friday and it has caps off my week on a high note! This is the
best thing ever because now I also know that I qualify for a whole lot more
stuff which is great. In addition, I have had someone watching my How to
S.W.O.T. Away the Competition webinar which is a major feat in my book. Someone
is interested in my material which is great. Furthermore, I am going to use
this as a tripwire for my book! I do think that this will be great. Lastly, I
am very happy that my Cavs have bounced back from the brink of extinction to
win big at home. Go Cleveland!

Year in Review 2014
This
year has seen the greatest change since arriving in Washington, DC. I have
transitioned from the public to private sector and am studying for my third
project management certification. In addition, I have applied for more
prestigious fellowships and positions testing me. Even through the adversity, I
refuse to remain stagnant else I would die personally and professionally. Although
the change has been great, I have matured emotionally to handle everything
coming my way. In 2015, I see myself earning my PMI-PBA certification and most
importantly, experiencing the biggest and brightest future ever!

Staying Started
Everyone
talks about getting started but how many people stay started? It’s east to
start something new. It’s hard to stay committed throughout the process. When
the pursuit isn’t shiny and new, it’s hard to muster enthusiasm doing the rote,
mundane tasks. I admit that at times I am guilty of this behavior. Inertia
erodes things. I need to stay started instead of staying stagnant. Therefore, I
am going for these three things the rest of this year: 1) finding the job that
I want; 2) earning my CBAP certification; and, 3) earning my PMI-PBA
certification; and, the only way to accomplish these three things are to stay
started.

Something New Comes This Way
I have learned that I can leave my
apartment for another one if I have a good reason. For a time, I’ve been in
escrow. Here I’m thinking that I need to go straight to homeownership but there
are other available options. I love it because I will move out by Labor Day. I’ve
been here for six years. I’ve arrived as a GS-09 and will leave as a GS-14. Not
too many people can say that he or she has received a grade increase every
year.
My goal is to manage my money better
especially since I’m earning more than the DC median income. After everything
that has transpired, I am better off than most. At least I have some options
versus others. Since I am making more money, I know that I can save an enormous
down payment and stay in midtown DC. However, having earned my PMP I know that
I’m capable of making more money so I’ll start looking for consultancy work. I
know that I can earn more money. If I can go from GS-09 to GS-14 then certainly
I can move up the same. If I truly want something, I just assemble a plan and
execute it.

Completing Statistics 1
I have submitted my final assignment
for my online statistics 1 class this evening.
It is a big step in the right direction.
Having been on the job for 7+ months, I’ve been spinning my reels trying
to discover what my job duties were.
Once they were finalized, I saved my money enrolling in this class. The
new fiscal year dried up education funds but I had enough money from my new
promotion to pay for it. Taking this
statistics course was the best decision I made that November because then I got
hit with a whammy: they wanted me to perform quality engineer duties! Hello!
My job title was statistician not quality engineer; however, reading the
American Society for Quality and the quality engineer description aligned with
what they wanted.
I thanked God that I had the math and
one operations management class that I took at Cleveland State to give me a
background about this newfound territory else I’d be lost and gave up. I learned about acceptance sampling and
creating sample plans. I downloaded some
sample chapters and discovered that the online statistics school offered an
acceptable sampling course next spring.
I wasn’t waiting for April when my boss wanted it now! Therefore, I purchased the quality
engineering statistics book and saved my money for statistics 2. The school had a three-course beginning
statistics schedule. By the time I
finish, it’ll be February allowing me to enroll in statistical process
control. When I finish SPC, I’ll take acceptance
sampling. I possess great timing because
come New Year’s Day, I’ll be done with statistics 1 and 2. I’m halfway done by the time the ball drops
welcoming in 2013. I will look back at
all of this thinking what a journey. I’ve
started from 0 to this and still managed to be standing.

On the Eve of My First Business Trip
I am happy about preparing for this
El Paso trip. It’s my first professional
one. I’ve only be here for 6 weeks and
out of the blue, the director asks me to join him, the Deputy Director and
another employee. The request is so fast
that even with the GSA travel training and credit screening, I have to pay for
my own room because it comes less than 10 days needed to process my stuff. I will be reimbursed as soon as I touch down
in DC. The only bad thing is that it’ll be 99 degrees everyday in El Paso
versus 75 degrees in DC.
This
is my chance to prove my mettle by showcasing my statistical prowess. While reviewing my total quality applications
lessons, all of the advanced statistics knowledge starts returning. I mean every tidbit: t-distribution,
F-distribution, z-score, null hypothesis.
Everything which is the reason why I call all of the local bookstores
seeing if they carry Statistics
Essentials for Dummies. None of them
do forcing me to use Google Play. I will
still order the physical copy that I can hold, highlight and write notes in via
Amazon that’ll await me upon my return. It lets me flesh out everything that I’ve
read during the trip.

Mentality Change
Talking
to former officemate is the best thing to happen to my day because she has gotten the job
and I get to process my legal situation.
Originally, I am disappointed that it’ll take more than $8000 to get a
down payment; however, I realize that SBA has increased my salary substantially. I will save this amount in one year with a whole lot remaining. I just want to leave here before of all the
crap that has happened. Also I must pay
the lawyer and a settlement (maybe!). I
am just getting my feet underneath me by starting at SBA and this black cloud
still hovers over me. Yuck! I hate this; plus, I still need to square
away money for bills and starting my business. I will build my company one brick at a
time. The hardest thing is completing
the summary, therefore, I will pay $109 to enroll in the Writers Store
screenwriting punctuation course starting May 21st. I might also buy the Screenwriter’s Bible for
cheap because it is $90 cheaper than $109.
I have done just that because 1) it is cheaper and 2) I will finish
reading it way before May 21st. Doing this I no longer feel trapped and stuck and like a victim of circumtances. Now I'm empowered to submit my TV script to the channel I want it aired.
Finalnically, purchasing this book has saved $90 which is nearly equal to the $99 Ed2Go total quality fundamentals
course which will advance my career. This extra $90 amount will go towards total quality applications because this will improve my job performance. I cannot wait to receive the book and start my class because it empowers me focus my personal and professional lives. I cannot wait until I see my officemate again because I know that I will have more progress to relay to her and more money in my pocket.
