10 Years Strong

Today is my 10^th work anniversary. I started working at the Bureau of Economic Analysis as an Economist on May 15, 2006. I have made significant amount of personal and professional progress in a decade. I worked there for 6 years. BEA has moved from DC to Maryland. I have moved on from BEA but since live in DC. When I walked back from seeing my officemates, I felt like it was survivor of the fittest because DC had undergone a lot of changes but I survived them. After 4 promotions in 9 years, a couple of discrimination complaints and fighting off eviction due to a new company wanting to raise the rent and push out poor people, I was still there!

Now I am at the beginning of the new 10-year phase. I am an entrepreneur who is on the cusp of releasing my first book entitled Expand Your Personal Brand. If the first 10 years here in DC is any indication, I am onto bigger and better things! These first 10 years were just the warm-up!

One Year and Counting

I have celebrated my one year anniversary with my current employer. I have learned to become more self-reliant since my current agency doesn’t offer clear instructions like my former agency. Thus far I’ve spent money enrolling in several online statistics courses. Currently, I am enrolled in intro to quantitative risk analysis to learn more about creating model to predict the riskiest clients saving us millions of dollars. Even though my agency wants this to happen, it doesn’t have a plan ironed out; therefore, I’ve taken the initiative. This initiative has helped me become stronger. I admit that in the beginning I was over my head; however, I’ve managed to right the ship acquiring a new level of resiliency in the process. Furthermore, having taken all of these classes have me contemplating going to doctoral school for either statistics or biostatistics. One year from now, I will have my promotion and a clearer understanding. Most importantly, I will look back at today and say ‘what a piece of cake!’

Honoring Dr. Maya Angelou and Commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King's Assassination

Today commemorates the 45^th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray. It is amazing how much racial progress has been made since 1968. America has a black president, school desegregation, you can shop, live, eat and play anywhere you want.

It is also Dr. Maya Angelou’s 85^th birthday. She is a national treasure for her civil rights advocacy and poetry. Her grace and perseverance in the midst of overt segregation is honorable. She has survived and thrived and if I get to be 85, I would want to accomplish the same level of success.

Celebrating my Birthday in Cleveland

I returned to my hometown Cleveland for my birthday. I truly needed a break from DC’s breakneck pace and dangerously hot weather. Off of Lake Erie, the temperature was 75 degrees. When I returned to Baltimore Washington Airport it was 93 degrees! In between the Wednesday when I landed and this Monday when I returned, I managed to reconnect with family, visit Cleveland State University, my alma mater, celebrate my birthday and 10^th year Master of Business Administration anniversary at Mortons Cleveland Steakhouse (after telling the waiter my story, he told another couple who paid for my chocolate mousse dessert!), relax at the Doubletree Cleveland hotel and eat at Mallorca and John Q. Steakhouse. Enjoy my photos!
