A
business card company offers to host my website. Although I decline the offer,
the idea has gotten me thinking. I have an MBA and a PMP so I possess a wealth
of insight for people. I aim to put it to great use by writing what I know.

Preparing for the Project Management Institute's New Professional Business Analyst (PMI-PBA) Certification
Friday I learned from Project
Management Institute’s Twitter that it is holding a Professional Business
Analyst (PMI-PBA) certification pilot program.
This motivated to read PMBOK, BABOK and purchase a study book to
prepare. Unlike my PMI-ACP certification
endeavor (which I will return to later this year), I have a lot more overlap
with business analysis than agile. I
have a PMP, MBA, business analysis education and 8 years’ business analysis
experience. I would easily qualify.
After
debating and expending much energy deciding whether or not to return to my
office, I’ve discovered that I can copy and paste the BABOK to Word enabling me
to create a chapter 1 summary sheet. There is a whole lot of information that I
must grasp but I am ready to absorb everything in order to pass the PMI-BPA
pilot program. Though 61% is probably
the passage rate, I am aiming for 80% and will accomplish this through using
CBAP exam materials. I do think that
buying the Rita Mulachy CBAP flashcards and writing down a couple per day will
help me become stronger in the business analysis area. Even though this is
chapter 1, there is so many differences between business analysis and project
management. I have to learn the lingo. My brain is expanding with blood
circulating through parts of my brain I probably haven’t used since studying
for my PMP last year.

Rededicating Myself to Studying for the PMI-ACP Certification
I’ve considered rededicating myself
to studying for my PMI-ACP certification today. Ever since October 1st,
I felt like something was untapped. I needed to adapt to a new situation.
Earning my PMI-ACP certification is the answer because there are a lot of IT
and agile opportunities out there that I can tap. I already have PMP certification
and 3.5 months later it’s high time to start working on earning my second
certification. I’ll apply the same schedule of taking one knowledge area
practice exam then a full practice exam every week that I implemented while
studying for the PMP exam. Furthermore, I am mentally in 2014 mode and earning
my PMI-ACP certification is a nice way of ending 2013 and starting 2014. I am
thinking bigger and better for next year. I am looking for my GS-15 and armed
with two project management certifications, I know that I’ll get one.
I am all about taking full advantage
of opportunities and the PMI-ACP certification is one. I know that employers
are starting to demand it and why not position myself? Though many people have
the PMP, not too many have the PMI-ACP. Also the PMI-ACP is more rigorous than
Certified Scrum Master (CSM). Personally, I am all about the grind. Whenever I
see that there’s a pathway leading me to more opportunities, I take it. It’s
the reason why I have an MBA, PMP and now a PMI-ACP before December 31st.

Being Open to Change
This
month I will have been on my new job for 8 months; and, in 4 more months I will
receive my next promotion. This
realization motivates me to purchase the Be Your Own Boss book because I need
to manage my money and opportunity. Last
night I attended the DC Black MBA Christmas party. I observed that most members were only 5-10
years older than I was but earning less than I did. Right then I sat still analyzing peoples’
conversations. Being still sharpened my
intuition. Mentally I saw myself 5-10
years older as a corporate executive armed with my MBA/PMP/CPA/CQE
certifications not stuck in middle management.
Obtaining my CAPM certification resulted in my receiving this job. It took me 3 years to land this job but I
didn’t quit and didn’t resign myself to the fate that I’d always be stuck in
the middle. Securing the PMP/CPA/CQE certifications guaranteed at least two
more promotions.
Returning to purchasing the book,
even though I am not starting a business yet, I equate my professional career
as a business. Since I know that I will
receive another promotion in 4 more months, I must position myself to be
successful. I will earn $16,000 more
money and might even exceed the payroll tax maximum. Next year I will travel more. I will attend the NBA All-Star weekend in
Houston. If I like Houston, I will
return for the Black MBA annual conference next September. Personally, I want
to read this book as mental preparation for the new year. I am already using my own money to enroll in
statistics classes and read quality engineering books for my job. This change is heaped on me without notice. Learning how to effectively manage unforeseen
changes in a business context will help me personally and professionally in
2013.

Celebrating my Birthday in Cleveland
I returned to my hometown Cleveland
for my birthday. I truly needed a break
from DC’s breakneck pace and dangerously hot weather. Off of Lake Erie, the temperature was 75
degrees. When I returned to Baltimore
Washington Airport it was 93 degrees! In between the Wednesday when I landed
and this Monday when I returned, I managed to reconnect with family, visit
Cleveland State University, my alma mater, celebrate my birthday and 10th
year Master of Business Administration anniversary at Mortons Cleveland
Steakhouse (after telling the waiter my story, he told another couple who paid
for my chocolate mousse dessert!), relax at the Doubletree Cleveland hotel and
eat at Mallorca and John Q. Steakhouse.
Enjoy my photos!

Agenda: Lead!
I have been accepted into my new
agency’s leadership development program.
I am very happy about this achievement since I’ve been here less than 90
days (I will officially be there 90 days on July 23rd. I will be in Fresno, California at a conference.). Even though I’m in the second installment,
due to my not being here a long time, I am nevertheless happy to make the
cut. This makes me two leadership
programs for two agencies!
Acceptance has motivated me to
restart studying for project management.
Today I’ve written down all of the PMP Practice Makes Perfect practice
test c wrong answers. I’ve scored 76.1%
which is more than enough to pass the certification exam; but, I will score no
lower than 80% on practice test D. Breaking 80% gives me the 10%+ cushion
allowing me to walk into Prometric and pass the PMP exam the first time.
Earning my PMP certification has been
a nearly one-year journey. Though the
frequent business trips have delayed my taking the exam, I am adamant about
taking it in August. My scores show that
I am nearly there. However, I am not
relying solely PMP Practice Makes Perfect.
I will take the Farnsdale PMP practice paper exam while in Fresno. Since it is a 4-hour flight from Phoenix to
Fresno, I am packing it in my bag because this is a productive use of my
time. I am thinking about carrying the
Oliver Lehmann paper test. I am not
going to the Fresno facility on Monday allowing me one day to work on project
management. I will take full advantage of this. Obtaining this certification
makes me the deadly MBA/PMP combination that I crave! This combo increases my competitive advantage
over other people. This is what I call a
productive summer!
